Jabir ibn Hayyan, a renowned Muslim scientist is known as the father of chemistry for his pioneering contributions. Born in 1721, he discovered key chemical compounds still used today. The 2024 STEAM festival at King Salman Science Oasis in Riyadh is highlighting the early life and legacy of the scientist.
The festival is set to run till Sept 30 under the theme Fun Chemistry and will offer educational, informative and entertainment experiences.
Ibn Hayyan’s innovations such as distillation greatly advanced chemistry in both the Islamic world and the west. His works are studied and taught in foreign nations and have been translated to Spanish language. His notable discoveries include the hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, gold water and silver nitrate. Apart from this, he also contributed in researching practical uses like steel production, waterproofing and creating artificial pearls.
Scholar Ibn Khaldun praised him as “the Imam of Chemistry writers”. The festival aims to instil pride in KSA’s scientific heritage and align with future goals. It features over a 100 workshops, live shows, panel discussions and interactive exhibits across STEAM fields exploring the past, present and future of science and technology.
The event also showcases local innovations, sustainable innovations, and modern tech reflecting the Kingdom’s dedication to scientific progress.
