UAE, UN engage in meticulous discussions atHigh-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on SustainableDevelopment

The UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development kicked off in the US onMonday. Till July 17, the event will hear from participants about experiences, best practices andlessons learned in implementing the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.The UAE delegation to the 2024 HLPF met with the UN Deputy Secretary-General AminaMohammed on July 10 to discuss best steps to accelerate progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) over the next six years.

The Emirati delegation is being led by Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Deputy Minister of Cabinet Affairsfor Competitiveness and Knowledge Exchange and Chairman of the National Committee onSustainable Development Goals.

UAE setting precedent in identifying development prioritiesIn the meeting, the UAE minister noted his country’s focus on eliminating poverty and hunger,promote climate action, establish strong and effective institutions, and create partnerships thatsupport sustainable development goals.Representatives from the UAE presented at key sessions at the UN headquarters highlightingthe Gulf state’s model for facilitating access to energy, eliminating poverty and hunger, and securing a more climate resilient future, as per official media reports.

Lootah said the UAE has set a global precedent in identifying development priorities, includingbuilding sustainable healthcare systems, creating energy and climate solutions, and forgingstronger partnerships to support progress on SDGs. UAE implementing best practices in sustainable development

“The UAE has invested heavily in healthcare, renewable energy, and climate action and beganimplementing global best practices in sustainable development long back and even before theUN adopted the 17 SDGs in 2016,” Lootah added.He noted: “The UAE’s participation at the forum aims to highlight these urgent priorities … andexplore opportunities to enhance cooperation around SDGs … The UAE looks forward to furtherprogress on this path and we firmly believe collaboration is the fastest way.”The delegation also participated in a session on clean energy. Lootah presented the country’scommitment to tripling renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency by 2030, apledge made by over a 100 countries at the COP28 Summit in Dubai last year.Insight into 17 Goals for global transformationThe Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) include 17 goals to bring a global transformation.These are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives andprospects of every person across the globe.The 17 Goals are interconnected, apply to all countries and need to be carried out by allstakeholders – governments, the private sector, the UN system, civil society and others – in athoroughly collaborative partnership, as per the official site.
