UAE-supported solar energy station in Yemen to remove people's suffering

The Yemeni government recently inaugurated a solar energy station funded by the UAE. Prime Minister Ahmed bin Mubarak expressed his government’s gratitude for this strategic project, highlighting that it marks a significant step in the direction of clean energy.

The project’s total area spans 1.6 million square metres east of Aden, the provincial capital of Yemen. The inauguration comes at the height of a brutal electricity crisis South Yemen has been suffering from, driven by insufficient generating capacity and a fuel shortage.

Energy stations in Aden currently rely on fossil fuels, leading to high fuel costs and a number of risks to the country’s ecosystem and environment. But the solar energy project is believed to help improve both energy security and environmental sustainability in Yemen.

Yemen electricity crisis significant affecting people’s lives

Citizens in the southern governorate in Yemen celebrated the inauguration of the solar plant, the country’s first strategic project fully funded by the UAE. The ongoing electricity crisis in Yemen has a significant impact on people’s daily lives, especially during peak summers.

The Aden project is one of a series of UAE projects in Yemen to advance the electricity sector. The Yemeni government held an official inauguration ceremony on Monday. Several government officials of the country attended the event.

The ceremony featured a photo gallery and documentary film representing more than 211,000 solar panels, over 900 km of electrical cable, 43,000 pits and metal structures, 12 substations, 9 km of high-voltage lines on a 1.6 million square metre site and construction.

Milestone in UAE’s support for betterment of Yemeni people

More than 2,000 local and international professionals have been involved in the project. They together dedicated over 1.3 million hours and sustained no injuries in the process. The solar energy station represents both the UAE and Yemen’s commitment to sustainability.

During the inauguration ceremony, the Prime Minister of Yemen stressed that the project, implemented by UAE’s Masdar, is one of the most important strategic clean energy projects in the country and that it demonstrates the outcomes of climate summits.

Minister Bin Mubarak thanked the “generous support of our brothers in the UAE for the implementation of the project and the implementation and consulting firms.” The plant is a milestone in the UAE’s support for the betterment of the Yemeni people.
