UAE Joins Seven Countries in Renewed Push for Gaza Peace

The UAE has come out with its arms around Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Türkiye, Indonesia and Pakistan, announcing a fresh round of diplomacy centered around the Gaza peace proposal.

The eight foreign ministers who met in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly expressed their deep concern about continued humanitarian suffering of people in the Gaza strip and wanted the implementation of existing commitments, on September 21.

Call for Ceasefire Compliance and Humanitarian Aid

The ministers urged the swift implementation of the arrears to be settled for the first phase of the Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict. They emphasized the importance of maintaining the ceasefire and stopping ceasefire violations.

The message also urged for the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid and early recovery supplies to the region without delay or harm to the vulnerable and for rehabilitation of key infrastructure in Gaza.

Road Map Sets Out Phase Two Framework

The eight countries referred to the Road Map as a part of the Comprehensive Plan and the “how” of its second phase.

Among the items on the list are the decommissioning along with full Israeli withdrawal, deployment of an International Stabilization Force (ISF), transfer of responsibilities to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), and early recovery and reconstruction.

Push for Palestinian Statehood

The ministers also affirmed their support for achieving “Palestinian self-determination and independent statehood”, as well as their efforts to promote a long-term regional peace process, which include the Gaza roadmap.

The group has previously spurned suggestions that it would support forced displacement, and reiterated its call for East Jerusalem to be part of any Gaza and West Bank to be used under a two-state solution, yet maintaining a territorial unity of the two regions.

US Engagement Remains Central

The statement emphasized the importance of the United States in moving the Comprehensive Plan forward, and urged continued American presence to address barriers to the Road Map.

It is important for continued collective efforts with the United States, the Board of Peace, the Palestinian Authority and other concerned parties to promote the implementation and meet the humanitarian and reconstruction needs in the Gaza Strip, the ministers said.
