In a major development, UAE President HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed has ordered a pardon for Bangladeshis involved in last month’s demonstrations in different cities. Their sentences are set to be cancelled and their deportation arranged next.
Scores of Bangladeshi nationals had earlier been convicted of triggering disturbances across several emirates. Dr Hamad al-Shamsi, UAE attorney general, has issued an order to halt the implementation of the prison sentences and begin deportation procedures.
The attorney general has called on all UAE residents to respect the country’s regulations, stressing that the state provides legal means for expressing opinions, ensuring this right does not turn into actions that could harm the interests of the country and its people.
Mohamed bin Zayed and Muhammad Yunus hold important call
The order comes after the UAE President and HE Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor of the interim government of Bangladesh, had a call late last month to discuss bilateral relations. HH Sheikh Mohamed congratulated Yunus on assuming his recent duties.
The Emirati leader expressed his hope that Yunus’ leadership can bring prosperity to his country and people. He highlighted his interest in collaborating in the coming period to fulfil the aspirations of their peoples for development and prosperity.
In response, Muhammad Yunus extended his gratitude to the UAE President. He expressed his hope for continued progress and prosperity for the Gulf state and reaffirmed his commitment to bolstering bilateral relations.
