It seems a sizeable slice of the UAE has come to the Sinai Peninsula. The spot is currently full of Emirati volunteers, playing a significant part in a global humanitarian effort to help more than a couple of million lives devastated by the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
The brutal Gaza crisis erupted on October 7 as Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israeli cities, killing some 1,200 people and taking several others hostages. Israel’s retaliatory strikes on Gaza, on the other hand, have already claimed close to 40,000 lives.
UAE interest in helping prepare for post-conflict scenario
Since the beginning of the conflict, aid efforts by the UAE in the Egyptian and Palestinian territories have cost the Gulf state around $700 million, Sultan Mohammed al-Shamsi, one of the Emirati officials overseeing the operations, told Bloomberg in July.
This significant contribution includes the setting up of a field hospital in the southern Gaza city of Rafah that has treated close to 50,000 people, according to its staff, and a second makeshift medical facility on a ship anchored close by on the Mediterranean Sea.
The UAE is using its diplomatic relationships and financial aid to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians. The country has also indicated an interest in helping prepare for a post-conflict scenario – including by sending security forces into Gaza, reported Bloomberg.
UAE launching ‘Operation Chivalrous Knight 3’ for Gazans
The UAE seeks to make itself an important diplomatic intermediary that can address the violent crisis and find a long-lasting solution. In other international interventions, the Gulf state has also helped broker multiple Russia-Ukraine prisoner exchange deals this year.
In the beginning of the Israel-Hamas conflict, the UAE leadership launched its humanitarian arm ‘Operation Chivalrous Knight 3’ to take care of the urgent needs of Gazans. Experts say the nature of food insecurity in the besieged enclave is unprecedented in this century.
UAE continues essential aid efforts in Gaza
This month, through its humanitarian operation, the UAE distributed 70 tonnes of relief aid and tents among hundreds of families in the Gaza Strip. The contribution comes as scores of Palestinians are struggling to access basic necessities amid rising prices.
In another important contribution last month, the Emirates delivered tonnes of medical supplies and medications to hospitals and healthcare facilities across Gaza. Due to the ongoing violence, a significant number of hospitals in the strip have gone out of service.
