UAE at the Forefront of Global Humanitarian Support Says UN

The UAE is proving to be a pivotal contributor to global humanitarian efforts earning accolades from international leaders including Tom Fletcher, the United Nations Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator. According to his commendation, the UAE has its true commitment towards aiding the vulnerable population mostly by serving the agenda of the UN and the right of humanitarianism into the very ethos of this relatively young country and its leaders. 

A Tradition of Generosity and Strategic Partnerships:

The UAE’s commitment to humanitarian support is visible through its commitments in donating funds by collaborating with other nations. The country has donated around US $223 million to the “Flash Appeal for the Occupied Palestinian Territory” indicating its willingness to address the most pressing need for humanitarian assistance. In December 2023, the UAE took a major role in drafting a UN Security Council resolution calling for the immediate and unimpeded delivery of large-scale humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians in Gaza which demonstrates proactive engagement in international humanitarian diplomacy.

Beyond aiding financially, the UAE also has worked to boost the response to humanitarian challenges in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. The country is home to the International Humanitarian City (IHC) in Dubai, a major logistics hub for rapid deployment of aid. Founded in 2003, the IHC has been at the heart of global humanitarian logistics enabling the quickest response to crises across Asia and Africa thanks to its geolocation in proximity to important transport infrastructures. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the IHC staged the emergency supplies and ensured the UAE’s support for global health initiatives.

The UAE has defined its humanitarian aid modality through innovation and adaptability. Their adaptation of predictive analytics which along with the UN’s Centre for Humanitarian Data in The Hague seeks to enable foresight and proactive measures. In respect of crises which is meant to ensure that gaps in humanitarian interventions remain smaller and for less time. Fletcher underscored the significance of such alliances.
