Oman has successfully completed the renovation of two historic towers namely Al Mirir and Al Murabba in the village of Mirir situated in the Shinas, North Al Batinah Governorate.
Al Murabba Tower is located at the west of the coastal road in Mirir Al Matarish settlement. It is a square shaped building made of mud and stone. It measures 4.5 m in length, 3.3m in width and 7m height. It is built on an elevated plot and a southern wadi edges its site.

On the other hand, the Al Mirir Tower which is east of the road overlooking the Sea of Oman is depicted as a cylindrical tower made of mud and gravel measuring approximately 10m tall and 6m wide with multiple openings and features of coastal defense.
The restoration plan allocated by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism in North Batinah was carefully designed to preserve the authenticity of these important archaeological sites. The two towers which showcase the traditional style of Omani architecture are a part of Shinas historical landscape that comprises 35 towers and other notable forts including Shinas Castle, Rasat Al-Milh and Al Asrar Fort.
Hassan bin Sulaiman Al Jabri, the Director of the department expressed that the project was a community collaboration with local members donating labor and the ministry donating technical expertise and sarooj (traditional Omani mortar) and other construction materials.
This restoration effort demonstrates the Ministry’s larger plan to protect national heritage, promote cultural tourism and ensure that these architectural buildings are preserved for future generations.
