Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, has approved a new project – a specialised medical city dedicated to women and children’s health in the UAE capital.
It is part of a strategy to strengthen the emirate’s position as a major hub for healthcare. Slated to open in 2027, the medical city will be established by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi and PureHealth – owned by the city’s sovereign wealth fund ADQ.
Enhancing Abu Dhabi’s healthcare ecosystem
Sheikh Khaled visited the new site on Thursday, underscoring the plans represented a significant addition to Abu Dhabi’s healthcare ecosystem and enhance the city’s healthcare infrastructure, according to The National.
The project is set to include the Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), which will establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for pediatric care, the Corniche Hospital dedicated to women and newborns, a rehabilitation facility and a mental health centre.
The CoE will be a 250-bed facility and have 200 doctors ready to offer services and specialties, including oncology, ophthalmology, liver, kidney and bowel transplantation, neurosurgery, gastroenterology and cardiac medicine.
It is also set to advance research and innovation in the field of children’s health. Overall, the project is expected to offer 205 beds, with 90 dedicated to children and 15 maternity wards. A team of 130 doctors and 460 midwifery specialists will be available, too.
