Saudi FM Takes Part in GCC-ASEAN Talks to Boost Economic Cooperation

On the sidelines of the high-level week of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah attended a joint ministerial meeting between the ASEAN and the GCC in New York, USA.

The meeting discussed how the GCC and ASEAN can enhance their relationship, as well as how the current cooperation can be translated into more tangible projects and initiatives. The on-going coordination on regional and international issues was noted, among others, as was the discussion on economic, trade, investment and development opportunities.

GCC-ASEAN Economic Partnership Enters a Practical Phase

The discussions are part of the broader framework for increased cooperation between the GCC and ASEAN with regard to their common areas of economic interest. A declaration on economic cooperation marked the sectors which had a large potential for cooperation as trade and investment, digital technologies, agriculture and food security, energy, manufacturing, tourism and financial services.

The framework also emphasises the capacity to deepen economic integration, for example, through options of forming an ASEAN-GCC free trade agreement. Mechanisms might offer more opportunities for businesses in both areas to increase market access and establish cross-border partnerships.

Trade and Investment Remain Key Priorities

Enhancing trade corridors can help foster and support investment diversification and foster stronger private sector connectivity in the Gulf and Southeast Asia. Two vistas of cooperation are on the horizon – logistics and production, digital media and finance, both of which are already well established in the two regions.

A focus on building long-term relationships with regional clusters is among the key aspects of the GCC’s international economic relations. GCC countries’ officials have also highlighted this at UNGA 81 in terms of application of relationships into action and wider cooperation.

Energy and Green Transition Offer New Opportunities

Agriculture and food security is also included in the economic cooperation framework under the available framework of GCC and ASEAN. Stronger collaboration in feeding and food realization, fertilization, and agritech, along with agricultural trade would help to boost productive capacity and investment in agriculture supply chains.

The GCC had been established as an eastern Arabian platform where Saudi Arabia was struggling with the successes to increase the depth of cooperation in investment and economic matters with the ASEAN. The meeting highlights the link of ministerial diplomacy with key issues for the economy at UNGA 81.
