For the sixth time since its inception, Qatar has been recognized as the most peaceful country in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, in the 2025 edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI). The report was published by the Australia-based Institute of Economics and Peace. Qatar is ranked at 27 globally, as one of only three countries in MENA to be included in the top 50 most peaceful countries globally.
The Global Peace Index ranks and measures country peacefulness at an international level for 163 countries and territories, representing 99.7% of the world’s population. As an index, the GPI uses 23 measures in 3 key areas: Societal Safety and Security; Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict; and Militarisation.
While Qatar maintained an overall stable peace score (only a 0.99% variation), the broader MENA region reflects serious unrest. Evidently, the 2025 GPI report indicates that worsening conflicts in Gaza, Sudan and Syria are significant contributors to regional instability. The conflict in Gaza has, to date, reported over 63,750 dead people in the conflict (likely more).
While Qatar is located in an unpredictable area of the world, Qatar is a significant diplomatic player, even conducting a set of peace talks that resulted in an agreement between the Congo and Rwanda. This positively contributes to Qatar’s efforts as a diplomatic broker, and seeks to remain tranquil at home, thus affecting its quite high placement. According to the Global Peace Index, on the other hand, peace in the world declined for the sixth straight year, with a decline of 0.36% in 2025.The MENA region contains four of the ten least peaceful countries, creating a context to understand the significance of Qatar’s ranking.
As the world experiences escalating violence and political tensions, Qatar remains a rarity as an example of calmness in the Middle East.
