The Qatar Embassy in Syria is going to resume operations on Tuesday, the Gulf state’s foreign ministry said in a statement on Sunday. It comes as Qatari diplomats visited the country and met its transitional government after the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad.
In July 2011, Doha closed its Embassy in Damascus and recalled its ambassador. Unlike other countries in the region, Qatar did not restore diplomatic relations under Assad. The Gulf state remains committed to supporting the people of Syria.
In its meetings, the Qatari delegation reaffirmed the country’s full commitment to supporting Syrians after the success of their “revolution.” The officials discussed paths to facilitate the transport of humanitarian aid into Syria.
The delegation entered Damascus to complete the necessary procedures for the opening of the Qatar Embassy. They also assessed the needs of the Syrian brothers during this important phase, a Qatari foreign ministry spokesperson said.
