Oman Joins 11th World Fatwa Conference in Cairo

The Office of the Grand Mufti of Omani Sultanate was present at the World Conference on Fatwa (11th) in Cairo, Egypt. It attracted Islamic scholars, muftis and law researchers from over 80 countries over a period of two days.

The conference was sponsored by the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide from the province of al-Ifta in Egypt and organised by the latter’s office. Protections and risks to families amidst massive social and technological change were the themes of the event.

Sheikh Ahmed Al Siyabi Leads Omani Delegation

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saud Al Siyabi, Secretary-General of the Office of Ifta, led Oman’s delegation to the event. Through his involvement, he drew attention to Oman’s involvement in international debates on modern-day Islamic jurisprudence and family guidance.

This year, the main theme of the conference was: “Family Challenges Amid Major Transformations: A Fatwa Approach to Protecting the Family and Preserving Its Islamic Identity.”

Digital Transformation and Family Stability

Sheikh Al Siyabi in his speech emphasized the social, economic and technological revolution the Muslim families are experiencing today. He stressed the need to boost the awareness of fiqh rulings and deepen the values that work in strengthening the family.

The conference also explored the impact of digital culture and generative Artificial Intelligence in human relations. Digital isolation, evolving intransactions, increasing economic expenses of marriage and the impact of modern individualism were other issues that were raised.

Moving Toward Institutional Family Guidance

The need for developing institutional level approaches to family related fatwas instead of mainly reactive answers on individual questions was discussed. General guidance and mediation frameworks, and future oriented Iftaa policies were a part of these discussions.

With a focus on practical family issues, this strategy seeks to link jurisprudence, with the goal of informing decision-making and ensuring social stability. It also is the response to an increasing need for religious institutions to become more aware of emerging technologies and the changing social environments.

Oman’s Role in Contemporary Islamic Dialogue

Oman’s presence in the Cairo conference highlights its involvement in the world Islamic discourse and most recent jurisprudential problems. The Sultanate emphasizes balanced and progressive religious advice through its participation in discussions with the Iftaa authorities of other countries.

The conference also offered an opportunity to share views on the role of Islamic institutions in supporting families through the challenges of technological, social and economic shifts and preserving Islamic and cultural norms.
