France to Send Military Support to Saudi Arabia Amid Houthi Attacks

France is set to send troops and defence systems to Saudi Arabia to help protect the Red Sea port city of Yanbu, French President Emmanuel Macron said on September 24, 2026. The transfer is coinciding with increased drone and missile attacks in the Houthis’ march toward Saudi soil and towards key infrastructure.

France to Strengthen Saudi Air Defence

The French deployment is aimed at providing security around the important Saudi energy export hub of Yanbu and around the Red Sea port. Macron’s statement coincides with a rise in aerial incidents off Riyadh and over other key locations in the kingdom, after a spate of maritime threats in Yemen became more frequent in the Gulf.  

France has already been vocal about their support for Saudi Arabia. The French government on September 9 condemned the Houthis “military actions on civilian’s infrastructure” in Yemen and Saudi Arabia and insisted on an “urgent cease” to military level action.

Why Is Yanbu Strategically Important?

Yanbu is a big port city in Saudi Arabia that is connected to the Red Sea and the energy sector. How well it is set up is more crucial than ever as traditional energy and shipping lines have been disturbed elsewhere in the region. This was the latest reference to attacks on Yanbu by the Saudis, who recently remarked that traffic through their Red Sea route had dropped due to attacks.

Saudi Arabia is not the only place where Yanbu’s security is important. Damage to energy infrastructure or disruption of Red Sea shipping could impact on oil supplies, shipping and international energy markets.

Houthi Attacks Increase Regional Security Concerns

The recent outrage is in response to a series of Houthis’ attacks on Saudi territory. Saudi authorities are now claiming they’ve intercepted missiles and the Houthis have taken credit for targeting with missiles and drones strategic facilities such as Yanbu.

The deployment also coincides with the growing security linkages with Riyadh by others. Britain has pledged some military aid and Turkey has said it could support the Saudi military’s need as per its defence pact with Pakistan.  

What Does France’s Deployment Mean?

Saudi military aid will be accessible to other nations in their efforts to safeguard regional trade routes and the nation’s infrastructure. The priority here is defensive and French personnel and systems are expected to come under strict command enabling protection to be provided for the aerial threat to the city of Yanbu.

Its translation reflects further coordination in security between the French and the Riyadh governments as well, which are developing a stronger relationship as the country expands its military force. France and Saudi Arabia renewed their cooperation in defence in August, whereas France showed its solidarity to the Kingdom after the Houthis attack.
