UAE’s Abu Dhabi has been named the safest city in the world for the eighth consecutive year. The emirate lured an overall score of 86.8, again landing the top spot in the latest global safety ranking of more than 300 cities by Numbeo.
Numbeo’s Safety Index ranks 331 cities across the globe. Besides the UAE capital, three more cities in the Gulf state secured spots in the top 10, including Ajman, Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah in the fourth, fifth and sixth spots on the list, respectively.
Taipei in Taiwan, Doha in Qatar, Muscat in Oman, The Hague in the Netherlands, Bern in Switzerland and Munich in Germany ranked second, third, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth on the list, respectively, completing the top 10.
Securing Numbeo’s title of world’s safest city since 2017
The safety index is based on the survey responses of website visitors, who were asked about perceptions of safety and crime levels in their city. In terms of safety walking alone during daylight and during night, Abu Dhabi scored 90.07 and 83.88, considering 528 responses.
In addition, the capital city scored 8.81 (very low) in terms of level of crime, 20.90 (low) for problem corruption and bribery, and 12.45 (very low) for worries being subject to a physical attack because of your skin colour, ethnic origin, gender or religion.
Abu Dhabi has held Numbeo’s title of the world’s safest city since 2017, reflecting the emirate’s global leadership in implementing best security standards, enhancing quality of life for citizens, residents and visitors, according to a statement from Abu Dhabi Media Office.
Ranking first out of 329 cities in the 2024 standings
The online database’s rankings also reflect the UAE city’s ongoing efforts to ensure a good quality of life for citizens and residents, the statement added. Major General Maktoum Ali Al Sharifi, director general at Abu Dhabi Police, also elaborated on the rankings.
“Abu Dhabi Police has invested in numerous success factors. We trained leaders who can foresee the future and invested in innovative policing to achieve radical transformation,” Zawya quoted the director general as saying.
He also highlighted that “Abu Dhabi Police has utilised advanced technologies, artificial intelligence and big data and empowered human capital and talent as highly competent professionals.” Nonetheless, securing the top spot consecutively is a remarkable feat.
