Ranging from 1 to 5 pearls, the Estidama Pearl Rating System assesses buildings on the basis of their adherence to sustainability requirements. Meeting certain requirements set by the tiered system is essential for obtaining a building permit.
The Sustainable Buildings Section of Abu Dhabi City Municipality recently reported that 304 projects in the design phase and 81 projects in the construction phase have met the Estidama sustainability standards since the beginning of the year.
Ensuring sustainability of construction sector in UAE
In terms of the key criteria a project is required to meet to obtain the Estidama Pearl Rating, the Sustainable Buildings Section confirmed that there are mandatory and optional credits to pay attention to. Fulfilling the optional credits can lead to a higher pearl rating.
The tiered system encompasses numerous main credit categories, such as natural systems, indoor and outdoor livability, energy and building materials. For instance, indoor and outdoor livability focuses on ensuring good indoor air quality and adequate shading in outdoor spaces.
The Estidama Pearl Rating System is a crucial tool to ensure the sustainability of the building sector in the UAE. This is especially important as the construction sector contributes approximately 40% to annual greenhouse gas emissions.
Impact of Estidama Pearl Rating System on UAE
In terms of the positive impact of implementing the Estidama system, the Sustainable Buildings Section highlighted that such a practice extends the lifespan of buildings, enhances occupant comfort, reduces operating costs, and minimises carbon footprint.
Under the system, projects funded by the government need to meet a minimum 2-pearl rating, and those funded by private entities are required to meet at least a 1-pearl rating. There is a meticulous process in place to note buildings’ adherence to sustainability.
