Production on Netflix’s hit series Emily in Paris was temporarily halted following the sudden death of assistant director Diego Borella, who collapsed during filming on August 21, 2025, at the Hotel Danieli in Venice, Italy.

Borella, a 47-year-old Venetian native, had been hired locally as a third assistant director for Season 5. Colleagues say he had just begun prepping for the day’s final scene when he collapsed around 7:00 p.m. Despite immediate medical attention and CPR, he was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Borella had a rich artistic background that extended beyond film. Born and raised in Venice, he trained in Rome, London, and New York, and was known for his work in visual arts and children’s literature. Friends and colleagues described him as a thoughtful collaborator, a creative spirit, and a deeply kind presence on set.

While the official cause of death has not yet been confirmed, early reports indicate he likely suffered a heart attack.

Production and Release Update

Following Borella’s passing, filming was paused for two days out of respect for his memory. The production resumed on August 23, with cast and crew returning to work in a somber but determined spirit.

Paramount Television Studios issued a statement mourning the loss of a “valued colleague,” while Netflix confirmed that the Season 5 release will continue as scheduled.
