dubai's sustainable oasis hatta hydroelectric plant thrives, 2025 beckons

In a significant stride towards sustainable energy solutions, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has announced that the Hatta Hydroelectric Plant, a cornerstone of its ambitious projects, is well on its way to completion by early 2025.

With an investment totaling AED1.421 billion ($381 million), nearly 80% of the project has been accomplished, showcasing Dubai’s commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility. The Hatta Hydroelectric Plant is positioned as a crucial element in Dewa’s portfolio, integrating cutting-edge technologies to address current and future challenges, particularly those related to climate issues.

Once operational, the Hatta project will flaunt a substantial capacity of 250 MW and an impressive storage capacity of 1,500 MWh, boasting a lifespan of 80 years. These features align seamlessly with Dewa’s dedication to delivering world-leading services while actively seeking sustainable solutions.

Dubai’s pursuit of these advancements positions it as a frontrunner among the most innovative and future-ready cities globally. The Hatta project contributes significantly to the realization of Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050, a visionary roadmap for a sustainable and eco-friendly future.

During an inspection tour of the Hatta plant site, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, expressed his satisfaction with Dubai’s achievements in the clean energy sector. He emphasized how the project mirrors Dubai’s spirit of leadership and vision for comprehensive and sustainable development.

The Crown Prince highlighted Dewa’s efficiency in executing sustainable projects, evident in the impressive completion rates of the hydroelectric plant. Anticipated to be operational by early 2025, the project aligns with Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Net Zero Strategy 2050, aiming for 100% clean energy production capacity by 2050.

Such accomplishments reinforce the UAE’s positive role in addressing climate change effects on a global scale, exemplified by its hosting of events in Expo City Dubai. Sheikh Hamdan was briefed on the project’s progress by Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dewa, who emphasized that these sustainability initiatives align with the UAE’s preparations to host climate summits. The Hatta Hydroelectric Power Plant is a pivotal component of Dewa’s strategy to diversify energy sources and invest in the energy storage sector, marking a bold step towards a greener and more sustainable future.
