What Was Upgraded
Dubai Metro is making substantial improvements to its cooling systems on specific key lines. The specific routes of the improved cooling systems have not been shared, but officials have confirmed multiple lines received upgraded HVAC systems to address Dubai’s extreme summer heat.
Why This Matters
Temperatures commonly exceeding 40°C (104°F), effective air conditioning matters! This system upgrade is designed to:
1) Reduce onboard temperature for a more comfortable ride
2) Improve airflow and ventilation within rolling stock & stations
3) Increase energy efficiency and reflect PROMISEs in environmental sustainability

LARGER CONTEXT Energy & Sustainability
Beyond traveller comfort, the new cooling technology is also intended to cut power consumption and further the tram’s environmental footprint. These improvements are part of the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA)’s commitment to updating its infrastructure with an eye on sustainable development.
What’s Next for Dubai Metro?
While this improvement improves the current infrastructure, Dubai is looking ahead:
- Blue Line – A new Metro line, 30 km long with 14 stations, is underway; it is planned to be operational by September 9, 2029. This is part of an AED 18 billion investment into extending urban mobility in the emirate.
- Capacity enhancement – The Metro network currently covers 89.6 km with 55 stations on the Red and Green Lines. Future expansion with the new Blue Line will increase public transport capacity.
- Energy efficiency- upgrades to the cooling system and new trains with improved HVAC and digital monitoring are being added to the fleet.
