The latest superhero film, Blue Beetle, has topped the box office charts in North America, dethroning Barbie.
However, the film’s opening weekend earnings of $25.4 million were lower than expected and the lowest for a DC superhero film in recent years.
Blue Beetle stars Xolo Mariduena as a college graduate who gains superhuman powers after his body is taken over by a mysterious Scarab. Despite the lower earnings, the film has received positive reviews and is expected to perform well overseas.
Barbie, which had been dominating the box office since its release a month ago, earned $21.5 million in its fifth week and has now grossed over $1.27 billion globally.
In third place was Universal’s Oppenheimer, a historical drama about the origins of the atomic bomb, which has surpassed $700 million in global earnings.
Paramount’s animated film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem came in fourth, followed by Universal’s new comedy Strays.
Blue Beetle’s success in dethroning Barbie is notable, but the film’s overall performance has been disappointing. It falls short of the predicted earnings and has one of the lowest openings among DC Extended Universe films.
This is concerning, especially considering the film’s significance as the first superhero film with a Latino protagonist.

Several factors such as the impact of tropical storm Hilary and the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, which has limited promotional activities, have contributed to the lower earnings.
Blue Beetle has topped the box office collection charts and surpassed Barbie’s craze. However, its collection has been lower than expected. However, the film has received positive reviews and it may perform better internationally in the next few days.
