AI Bringing Big Changes to Major Industries: MBZUAI’s Role

Around the world, artificial intelligence (AI) is causing major changes in important industries. The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) in Abu Dhabi is playing a big role in AI research and new ideas across different sectors like healthcare, aviation, agriculture, education, and energy.

Healthcare:

MBZUAI is working on over 20 healthcare projects with partners like Malaria No More, Quris-AI, Aspire, Infinite Brain Technologies (IBT), Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), and Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City. This year, they started the Institute of Digital Public Health (IDHP) to help make AI better for healthcare. 

AI is already making healthcare better by making administrative tasks easier, improving diagnosis, and personalizing care for patients. Machine learning tools will have the biggest impact by looking at lots of medical data like patient records and scans to find patterns and predict diseases. This leads to earlier detection and better treatments. Recently, MBZUAI partnered with the Abu Dhabi Health Department and Core42 to start the Global AI Healthcare Academy to train healthcare workers in AI.

Aviation:  

In the aviation industry, AI is making operations better, improving safety, and giving passengers a better experience. Airlines use AI to predict when planes need maintenance, use planes better, and reduce delays. Last year, MBZUAI and Etihad Airways made an agreement to work together and do research on how AI can change the aviation industry. They will have joint training programs and look for research opportunities.

Agriculture:

AI is helping farms grow more food and use resources better. Drones with special AI cameras can look at crops from above. The AI can see if plants are sick or need more food early. Farmers can then fix problems fast. AI also looks at the weather and dirt to help farmers know exactly what the plants need. MBZUAI will work with Silal, an Abu Dhabi food company, to bring AI to agriculture and food production. They will make a joint AI centre to help the UAE grow more food and farm in sustainable ways.

Education: 

AI is changing education by personalizing learning for each student, automating tasks, and creating new learning experiences. Adaptive learning uses AI to customize curriculum and materials for each student’s needs and pace. Virtual tutors and chatbots give students help and feedback quickly. MBZUAI’s Metaverse Centre is researching AI metaverse solutions to let kids in remote areas virtually attend school in 3D worlds. They are also looking at making custom avatars and 3D content.

Energy:

In the energy industry, AI is making operations better, increasing efficiency, and promoting sustainability. AI also uses a lot of power, so MBZUAI is researching ways to reduce AI’s energy use. They made the AI Operating System (AIOS) to reduce energy, time and costs for AI computing. AIOS makes AI models smaller, faster and more efficient without needing expensive hardware. It also speeds up training AI models to save time.

Smart grids use AI to monitor and manage energy distribution in real-time, optimizing usage and reducing waste. A MBZUAI team is working on AI for smart grids using federated learning – training an AI model on user energy data without seeing personal info. This helps energy companies distribute energy much more efficiently and reliably.
