Dina Ahmed Becomes First Saudi Woman to Win Asian Games Medal

Saudi karate athlete Dina Ahmed has become the first ever Saudi woman to win a medal at the Asian Games, after winning bronze in the 20th Asian Games held in Nagoya, Japan.

In karate, Ahmed had a stellar comeback against her opponent Aruka Gurung in the women’s 68 kg category Final of the bronze medal bout. She trailed 3-0 in the score, but then rallied back to beat her opponent and claim victory to help her reach the podium on a Saudi athlete.

Dramatic Comeback Secures Historic Bronze

After Gurung got the scoreboard on his side thanks to a commanding start, the competition became tight and balanced for Ahmed as he went on to bag a real set of 24. It was not the deficit that defined the game, but rather the attacking pressure that Ahmed could do to put the deficit down on the floor and slowly chip away at it.

The Saudi karate player then executed a number of effective offloading combinations to gain an advantage, making the decisive turn. She maintained that lead to the end to win an 8–7 contest and win the historic medal.

A Landmark Moment for Saudi Women’s Sport

Throwing the achievement is a great step for Saudi’s presence in the Asian Games. This is the first medal that Saudi women won at senior Asian Games in the Kingdom’s history in the multi-sport event.

The results of the two podium finishes further bolstered Saudi Arabia’s presence at the Nagoya Games during the karate competitions, as well as representing the country in both male and female events.
