Gold Under Pressure as Strong Dollar and Higher Yields Weigh on Prices
Prices for gold were largely unchanged Tuesday following a drop to the lowest level in over a month in the previous session. Now the watchers are trying to get a hint from the US Federal Reserve on the future course of monetary policy at the upcoming policy decision.
Spot gold rose marginally to trade at $4,300.96/ounce as of 01:57 GMT on Monday following its lowest price since Aug. 7, when it was suspended from trading. The current sell-off is minor and trading is on hold while the market prunes down its interest rate betting.
Federal Reserve Decision Takes Center Stage
After the Federal Reserve made its policy decision, it has emerged as a major talking point in precious metals. Investors are pushing for more clarity in the future course of US monetary policy, as well as the impact of the forecasts on US interest rates on the gold market.
Pather pointed out that a stronger USD and higher yields could have a negative impact as gold doesn’t pay interest. So, fluctuations in currency and bond market conditions can affect the demand for bullion by investors.
US Gold Futures Move Lower
Despite the relatively stable December gold prices, future trading in U.S. gold futures was weakened by a 0.3 percent drop to $4,341.10.
Comparing what unit gold is currently trading at today with the average futures rate shows that the market has taken a dim view of gold. Investors on the whole do not seem prepared to make large adjustments until they get new directions from the Federal Reserve.
Silver and Other Precious Metals Show Mixed Performance
Tuesday dealt mixed news on trading for other precious metals as well. Silver has recovered slightly from an 0.1 percent drop to $63.28 an ounce, whereas gold declined by 0.2 percent to $1,661.95.
Platinum had fallen 0.1 percent to $1,757.46 and palladium was down by 0.7 percent to $1,283.61. The mixed performance suggests that the precious-metals complex operates in various markets.
What Investors Are Watching Next?
The Fed decision may give some guidance for gold and other precious metals. Whatever indicators are provided that would lead investors to believe in monetary involvement and where the interest rates will go next they are going to be looking for.
The price weakness seen in recent months, plus uncertainty around policy expectations, could mean trading volatility will not be dampened in the near term for traders of the gold. Whether the metal’s likely next step is out of President Bankgilim Isa Bahibou’s control, as the prices are likely to reflect the central bank’s message.
