FIFA Issues Official Response After Boycott Sparks ‘Selling Football’ Allegations

FIFA is firmly rejecting claims of the sale of football and one of the thorniest governance rifts in the sport’s history has stirred up after a commercial redraft plan was put forward. It comes in the wake of a unanimous boycott that UEFA member countries had earlier agreed on going on a boycott of any future matches organised by FIFA, a proposal that includes the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cups, should be withdrawn.

FIFA Rejects Privatization Claims

FIFA has denied that it is considering a sell-off of the World Cup in response to the moves to ease the pressure about its plan to sell off the event. The governing body makes it clear in its statement that “nobody is selling football” and that there is no discussion of governance of the sport itself in the proposal.

Even with any investment, FIFA will be a sample of the commercial activity in the sport, as all the regulatory, disciplinary and sporting aspects would remain in the sole authority of the FIFA Council, FIFA states.

What Is the FIFA Forward Enterprise?

The main topic of discussion is the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise, a newly formed entity to handle commercial affairs, including the media rights and the organization of events. In the proposed new model, PE firms would only come in for a minority stake, with FIFA keeping control of tournaments, guidelines for competitions and over the governance of international football.

The restructuring will net the subsidiary a value of about $20 billion, of which about $4.2 billion will be clocked through private investment.

FIFA Says Smaller Nations Will Benefit

FIFA says that the plan aims to make for better money flow in the world’s game. The new version would allocate, per member association, a base amount of $20 million, plus an optional bonus of $20 million per member association from FIFA Forward.

The organization believes that this will help financially weaker football federations in other developing parts of Africa, Asia, Oceania etc.

Opposition Continues to Grow

Opposition has grown to more than Europe, despite FIFA assurances. UEFA have already pledged to boycott FIFA events if the idea is implemented, with both the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF growing frustrated by the consultation process and the lack of governance.

Also, a number of key football administrators have stepped down in response to concern that the sport’s long-term independence, long-term tradition, and integrity may be tarnished by the edict of private equity in the commercial landscape of football.

Vote That Could Shape Football’s Future

All of FIFA’s 211 member associations will be able to vote on the proposal before the deadline for the vote, set for September 19, 2026. The governing body believes that the decision will be democratic and that ultimately the outcome can only be decided collectively by each of the confederations.

The outcome will likely have a significant impact on the commercial landscape of football and for the first time a strain on the balance of economic development versus club autonomy.
