Dubai Dates Festival 2026: Highlights, Award Winners, and What It Means for Local Farmers

The Dubai Dates Festival 2026 ended successfully after nine days of celebrating Emirati agricultural heritage, innovation and purity of sentiment. The third edition of the festival took place from July 18 to July 26 in Al Rimal, Dubai–Al Ain Road and had farmers, agricultural experts, heritage enthusiasts and thousands of people flocking to join in the celebration.

The festival, part of Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center’s efforts, aimed at highlighting the importance of preserving date palm cultivation and promoting sustainable farming practices that help maintain one of UAE’s most cherished cultural symbols.

Festival Dedicated to Excellence

The participants were allowed to compete in a number of categories throughout the event, each measuring the size, quality, moisture and cultivation methods of the fruits. The competitions sparked an interest in small scale farmers as well as commercial farms to produce the best dates and spread the knowledge about the various types of Emirati dates.

In addition to competitions, visitors were entertained with various educational exhibits, farm displays and bulk dates and had the opportunity to learn more about this traditional farming technique and alternative date-planting technology.

Celebrating Outstanding Winners

Ateeq Saif Al Omaimi won the ‘Al Das Al Thahabi‘ (Shield of Excellence), one of the festival’s most coveted awards. The Golden Shield will be awarded to those who have won medals across various categories in different competitions and demonstrate excellence in production and farming.

The festival also has the Al Nader Cup for exceptional quality of rare and superior date varieties. The Dubai Dates Medal 2026 has also been given to the late Abdullah bin Rashid Al Shamsi and Dr. Rashid Ahmed Al Mazrouei for their most significant contributions to date palm research, conservation and documentation of date palm heritage.

Sheikh Hamdan’s AED 1 Million Grant

One of the highlight events of the festival was securing an AED1 million grant from His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence. Grants will be awarded to festival attendees and showcases, giving immediate monetary benefits to the farmers.

Supporting Farmers and Food Security

Some financial support is involved, even if it’s not monetary. The programme highlights for the communities the importance of agriculture by promoting the plantings of domestic growers and commercial plantations, while at the same time it leaves a legacy for the following generations of the rare date varieties.

The festival also helps in the reinforcement of the national food security and sustainability targets. These higher standards of competition also make farmers work towards better irrigation systems, pest control methods, improved cutting, and overall high-quality production to increase the value and reputation of Emirati dates inside and outside of the country.

Symbol of Emirati Heritage

In the UAE, date palm has been a symbol of resilience, generosity, and cultural identity for years, and this is likely to continue in the future. This heritage is important and needs to be maintained as a joint responsibility, linking past and present as emphasised in the closing ceremony.
