The United Arab Emirates government has rolled out new regulations for worker accommodation to enhance the wellbeing of workers in licensed housing facilities and build better living infrastructure in the UAE.
These changes, revealed by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, will include providing free access to the internet, 24 hours a day; better health care services; cleaner living conditions; and more support services for employees.
The policy reflects the UAE’s wider vision to modernize labor accommodations facilities, in support of the welfare of the UAE’s expatriate workforce.
Free 24/7 Internet Access for Workers
Relaxed rules for Internet access come as one of the most significant changes, according to the aforementioned. The measure will help keep labourers in touch with their communities and families abroad and boost access to digital services and communication platforms.
Use of internet connection as a core requirement of welfare coverage demonstrates the increasing need for workforce communities to benefit from digital access for essential requirements as part of their modern lifestyles.
Expanded Healthcare and Emergency Support
The new standards also impose greater health-related standards for the accommodations provided to workers, including in larger labor camps. Now facilities accommodating more people will need to have medical clinics and first-aid facilities all the time at their disposal.
The measures are focused on strengthening emergency responses and provide faster access to basic health assistance to workers in existing health services for the population in residential facilities.
The policy is consistent with regional goal setting to further improve the standards of occupational health, worker safety and preventative care.
Improved Living Infrastructure and Hygiene Standards
The new plan also mandates upgraded codes for facilities that offer accommodation, covering sanitation, recreational facilities, and clean drinking water.
The recommendations put even more emphasis on the need to maintain hygienic living conditions and provide enough communal and leisure areas when not at work where wellbeing is achieved outside working hours.
Infrastructure quality is the main aspect, highlighting a greater overall emphasis on standards of living for staff, not only their accommodation.
Multilingual Guidance and Worker Awareness
The new standards also call for the provision of multilingual guidance documents to better inform workers of their rights and services available, and government mechanisms for guidance.
This means that health services, workplace support and procedures on emergencies and communication with relevant authorities will be made available to them.
Receiving instructions or advice in several languages should make the working experience more accessible to workers of all nationalities and languages in the UAE workforce.
Strengthening Workforce Welfare Frameworks
The new regulations for labor accommodation are part of the UAE’s continuous effort to modernize the regulations governing labor accommodation aligned with new priorities in the economy and robust the regulation to empower persons who are involved in the national economy.
For employers and business, the measures also highlight the need to continue to accommodate employees in line with international standards and standards for the wellbeing of employees.
The UAE is steadily building itself up as a global business and employment hub, and labour sustainability and quality of life goals, captured by workforce infrastructure and management, form and increasingly are core elements of long-term vision and strategy.
