International Museum Day: Visit Abu Dhabi’s Best Museums for Free This Weekend

International Museum Day 2026 continues Abu Dhabi’s Cultural Celebration with a city-wide programme for visitors who will be allowed to access several of the UAE’s most iconic museums and heritage sites for free.

With the duration of three days free entry from 16th to May 18, it allows residents and tourists to visit and enjoy world class exhibitions, workshops for the entire family, various guided tours and live performances.

The initiative is being spearheaded by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and is ongoing in both Saadiyat Island attractions and Abu Dhabi historic museums.

Louvre Abu Dhabi

Louvre Abu Dhabi will host unprecedented crowds in the free-entry weekend. Thanks to the “rain of light” dome made by the architect Jean Nouvel, people can go through the museum’s permanent display. 

Several thousand sketches and drawings, many dating from the 50s, are also on display at the museum in a meeting of the popular “Picasso, the Figure” exhibition, with more than 130 works included.

There are also special events such as weekend family-oriented educational opportunities, children’s workshops and evening film screenings.

Zayed National Museum

The Zayed National Museum is also celebrating with its galleries and cultural activities being opened free of charge.

The museum specializes in the UAE’s history and the legacy of Sheikh Zayed, offering immersive exhibitions and storytelling experiences.

The hotel also presents to the visitors interactive heritage workshops and traditional craft activities not only for the children, but for all guests.

Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi

There will be a breeze of free interactive science and discovery experiences at the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi.

It’s one of the world’s most complete dinosaur skeletons, ‘Stan the T. rex’, which is one of the attractions. Followers can additionally be part of educational workshops, discovery trails, or natural history and evolution-related labs.

Today, the long weekend, the museum’s family orientated activities can be expected to particularly appeal to children.

Historic Heritage Sites Join the Free Entry Campaign

In addition to Saadiyat Island, several other key heritage sites around Abu Dhabi are also giving free entry.

Books are being displayed and storytelling sessions are taking place within the oldest building in Abu Dhabi to interact with the people of the city and their culture.

In the meantime, the Al Ain Museum, Al Maqta’a Museum and Delma Museum are providing educational programs and guided tours on archaeology, marine and Emirati history.

Visitors Are Encouraged to Book Online Early

Entrance is still free but there are still curfews and timed entry systems in place at museums. It is extremely encouraged that visitors to the museums arrange their digital slots in advance before their visit, particularly at museums such as Louvre Abu Dhabi.

Department visitors are still welcome and arrangements close in advance will ensure a shorter time in line and a higher chance of entry during busy periods.

The campaign for International Museum Day is just the latest piece of the puzzle in Abu Dhabi’s burgeoning cultural tourism and family-friendly initiatives.
