UK eVisa

Before booking a trip to the UK, it is important to figure out the right entry requirement. UK eVisas are not the same as electronic travel authorisations (ETAs). Here is a simple explanation about an UK eVisa and the right process to use it for a smooth experience.

Visa – for some people to apply before travelling, depending on nationality and purpose

ETA – for visa-exempt visitors staying in the country up to 6 months

eVisa – for people granted a visa or long-term stay permission, stored digitally

UK eVisas are digital records of immigration status. It confirms your identity, duration of stay and current circumstances. Instead of carrying physical papers, your details are stored online. This system is gradually replacing:

– biometric residence permits (BRPs)

– biometric residence cards (BRCs)

– visa vignettes and passport stamps

In order to get your eVisa, create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account. You need a valid email id and phone number at a time of signing up. Confirm your identity and link it to your eVisa. Next, submit a set of supporting details, such as:

– a valid passport and visa application number or,

– a valid passport and BRP number or,

– expired BRP card (usable for 18 months after expiry)

Make sure to double check that your UKVI account matches your passport details before travelling. Keep your contact and passport details updated in the account. The UK eVisa system is designed to make travel easier, safer and paperless.
