Saudi Arabia Unveils Groundbreaking Riyadh Air, Revolutionizing Sustainability and Setting New Environmental Standards
As part of the Kingdom’s efforts to diversify its economy away from oil wells Saudi Arabia has officially launched Riyadh Air after it was first revealed in March. The launch comes as the global aviation industry races to meet demand amid growing environmental concerns.
Chief Executive Tony Douglas believes it will ultimately be commercial aviation sustainability that will make the winners standout from the losers. He said anyone who doesn’t take it seriously will face the brunt. Douglas shared that Riyadh Air will integrate digital innovation and authentic Saudi hospitality to deliver a seamless travel experience with the newest, more efficient planes.
The newly launched airline is touted as a global connector and a vehicle to drive tourist and business travel to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Riyadh Air’s new 787-9s will be the foundation for the airline’s worldwide operations as it builds a wider network and connects travelers to Saudi Arabia and other destinations across the world.

Douglas, former CEO of Etihad Airways, expects Riyadh Air to connect the Kingdom’s capital to other major cities in Europe by 2030, with the aim of 100 cities. The startup is also looking at major U.S. cities and Asia. He said Riyadh Air would make destination announcements through 2024 as it prepares for official take-off. The airline, a Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) subsidiary, showcased its new purple livery on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner at the Paris air show this week.

Saudi Transport Minister Saleh Al-Jasser had said on Twitter in March that Riyadh Air is the latest in a huge package of projects that will enhance Saudi Arabia’s position as an intercontinental base for aviation and a global logistics center. It will also boost the region’s tourism sector. The new airline is also part of PIF’s plan to expand to other industries in an effort to help the Kingdom in economic diversification.
